Why You Shouldn’t Fear Death
How to Not Be Scared of the Airplane Toilet
Get used to the sound of the airplane toilet. The sound of airplane toilets is the part that scares most people. About it a day before your flight, try listening to airplane toilet flushing noises via YouTube. It will get you used to the sound.
Try to avoid using the airplane toilet.Use the restroom at the airport before getting on the plane. Don't consume an excessive amount of fluid before getting on the plane, and avoid diuretic drinks such as coffee or alcohol. If you suffer from nausea or vomiting on planes (usually called airsickness), get a doctor to prescribe you an airsickness medication (if needed). This way, you won't need to use the airplane toilet excessively.
- Obviously, if you're on a long flight, it's impossible to completely avoid the airplane toilet, so this isn't your sole option.
Be quick about it to minimize exposure to the noise. If the noise of the toilet flushing frightens you, just use the toilet quickly, but don't flush it yet. Wash your hands, unlock the door, and then flush the toilet and get out of the restroom.
- For those who don't like flushing toilets because of the germs on the button, put something over your finger (e.g. a paper towel) when pressing the button, so you don't need to wash your hands again. Alternatively, use hand sanitizer afterwards (if some is available to you).
Listen to music.Bring your iPod or phone, as well as your headphones, into the bathroom and listen to music. It will drown out the noise and help you get it over with.
Be brave. You can't get over your fear without bravery.
Talk to the flight attendant if you are really scared.
Ask a friend or family member to come with you.If you're flying with someone else, ask them if they can come with you and stand outside the bathroom door, as some people find it can alleviate their fear a bit.
Dare yourself to stay inside the cubicle while it flushes. When you do, pat yourself on the back - you've faced a fear of yours, after all.
QuestionWhat do you do if I haven't had time to use the airport toilet before boarding?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerTry using the on board toilet before everyone is seated and just deal with it. Have a friend or family member stand outside and wait for you. At least the toilet will be really clean at this point and the plane won't be moving. You could also beg a moment to use the toilet in the airport before boarding, letting the boarding staff know you'll be one minute and no more. Thanks!
QuestionCan it suck your intestines out?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo, that is completely physically impossible. Thanks!
QuestionA long time ago I saw a commercial of a man in an airplane washroom. He pressed a button, the floors opened up and he fell out to his death. Can anything like this really happen?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo, it is impossible. Below the toilets is the cargo hold. To fall through the washroom, you must go through the first floor (cabin), then the cargo hold, then the additional floor that holds all the wires and fuel lines, and then you would fall through the aircraft. Thanks!
QuestionAre airplane toilets good?Community AnswerThey're just like any other toilet. Thanks!
QuestionAre the locking systems on all airplane toilet doors the same?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerIt will vary depending on the manufacturer of the aircraft and size of the aircraft too. Most large modern day passenger aircraft that operate with cabin crew will have a sliding lock mechanism on the inside of the door. As well as this, there will be an external locking and unlocking mechanism that can be used by the crew to either gain access and prevent unlawful behavior, provide first aid or special assistance, or simply to grant or deny access to the toilet during cruise or busy times of flight. Thanks!
QuestionHow can the crew open the door if I'm trapped?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerThough the crew won't do this unless there is a serious emergency, they have a master key that can access all washrooms. Thanks!
QuestionWhat do I do if I have a shy bladder and there are other people needing to use the toilet?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNobody will complain if you take a while in the bathroom! If the plane has 2 or more bathrooms, take all the time you want. If there’s only one, you might want to keep it as quick as possible. Thanks!
QuestionI have never visited the toilet on a plane. Would it be possible for a crew member to stand outside if I really needed to go?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerYes, that is possible, if they aren't busy they'd probably be happy to do that for you. You could also ask a friend, family member, traveling companion, etc. to stand outside. Thanks!
QuestionWhat if I'm severely claustrophobic? Do I lock the door before the light comes on?Community AnswerThe light comes on, dimly, when you open the door. Once you close the door there is limited time before the light goes off. When you lock the door, the light goes to its full brightness. Although airplane toilets are relatively small, you won't be in there for long, and there's enough room for you to move around. Thanks!
QuestionCan the toilet flush so hard it can cause a prolapse to the anal area?wikiHow ContributorCommunity AnswerNo. Your behind would have to be sealed to the seat without any air flow into the bowl at all, and even then, the suction would have to be much harder than the average toilet. I wouldn't worry about that. Thanks!
