How to sew a soft book

You will need
  • Velvet;
  • Soft cardboard;
  • Sheets with records;
  • PVA glue;
  • Awl;
  • Waxed thread;
  • A strip of skin.
Fold the sheets in the correct order. Make sure all pages are in place. Sheet corners must match. Be sure to add one sheet without records and illustrations at the beginning and at the end of the block. For convenience, secure the block of sheets in a frame of suitable size, putting it on the last page down.
Make several punctures with an awl in the right field, at a distance of 1 cm from the edge and 2 to 4 cm from each other, depending on the size of the sheets. Thread the waxed threads through the punctures and tie the ends tight enough so that the sheets remain assembled but not torn. Glue the sheets on the same field from the edge to the puncture level. Be careful to ensure that the glue does not spill over this border and does not blind the page. Set aside the unit to dry.
Cardboard is needed to shape the book. If you refuse to even have a soft frame, the cover will wrinkle and the sheets will bend, tear and rub off.Cut two rectangles to the size of the sheet or slightly larger (5 mm on each side). Cut out two rectangles of the same size from velvet, but add more seam allowances (1 cm on each side). The second pair of velvet rectangles will have a narrow side 1 cm less (if the book is vertical). Fold the parts in pairs (in each pair of two different sized rectangle) face inward. Stitch on three sides, leaving a side equal to the height of the book. Turn out the velvet bags, handle the edges of the remaining side.
Bend one side of each piece of cardboard. Glue the extreme pages of the block to the cardboard, so that the folds coincide with the places of the firmware. Attach a strip of leather in place of the spine, so that its edges coincide in width with the top and bottom of the book, and slightly go along the length of the cardboard. Glue to the book. Apply glue to the edges of the cardboard.
Put on velvet bags, aligning the edges with the last sizing. Wait until it dries.
