One is a world famous popstar with three decades of music industry experience and 70 million album sales to her name, the other is the youngest member of a ferociously commercial reality TV dynasty.
Now Kylie Jenner and Kylie Minogue are going head-to-head in a legal battle over their shared first name.
Kylie Minogue is not having any of it
The furore began when Kylie Jenner sought to trademark her first name in the US to cover her rapidly expanding clothing and beauty lines. Jenner’s massive commercial raft already includes nail varnish collaborations with Opi, a clothing line with Topshop, a best-selling lip kit and a vastly successful app that has even outsold her sister Kim’s.
But Kylie Minogue’s camp have decided this (showbiz) town ain’t big enough for the both of them. The team of lawyers representing Minogue have referred to her as a ‘secondary reality television personality’ while their client Minogue is by contrast an ‘internationally renowned performing artist, humanitarian, and breast cancer activist.’
Minogue herself has shown her anger over the attempted trademark by tweeting her 2.3 million followers ‘Hello… My name is KYLIE #lightyears’ which makes it pretty clear how she feels about the attempted identity theft.
Arguably Kylie Jenner’s celebrity is the first big threat Kylie Minogue has had to face in her 30 years as a popstar.
