The Cry's Jenna Coleman on how her new drama gets real about motherhood
The Cryshould come with a content warning. The series' unflinching portrayal of motherhood and postnatal depression might make you feel the same sense of isolation and unease emanating from Jenna Coleman's struggling protagonist, Joanna - but that's the point.
"I've never seen motherhood explored quite like this before on camera," the 32-year-old actress toldHarper's Bazaarabout her new BBC One series.
Coleman explained that it was important that the psychological drama gave a truly honest depiction of motherhood - and what life can be like for women post-birth - not just to make Joanna and the story believable, but because it's a subject we rarely see examined, warts and all.
"I think it's a lot of what people don't talk about - that it can be very isolating and you can lose your identity and feel alone," she continued. "And it's obviously postnatal depression that my character Joanna is going through, so we absolutely don't shy away from that at all."
The gripping and disorientating six-part drama is adapted from the , and follows young mother Joanna's mental unravelling after the birth of her first child with husband Alister (Ewan Leslie).
Despite their difficulties, Joanna and Alister, with baby son Noah in tow, decide to relocate to Australia so that Alister can regain custody of his teenage daughter from his former relationship with Alexandra (Asher Keddie).
