The Weird Thing You Never Noticed About the "Brady Bunch" Bathroom
There are few TV shows in which a bathroom played more prominently than on theBrady Bunch. You could even call the Brady kids' iconic jack-and-jill bath symbolic of the blended family itself; it was the setting of many sitcom-y squabbles, of course. And for a room so important, you'd think a hyper-realistic set would be crucial — but it didn't have a toilet!
Back in the '70's, when theBrady Bunchfirst aired, networks considered it crude to show a toilet bowl on screen, so they simply did without it. Oddly enough,Leave it to Beaver, which actually aired a decade before there was a story of a man named Brady, is credited as showing the first toilet on screen, but there was a catch. Only a peek at the toilet's tank — which was integral to the episode's plot — would get screen time.
The concept is certainly arcane, but at a moment when shock-value reality television continues to thrive, it's kind of endearing to think about a time when a toilet bowl might have been the most pearl-clutching thing to see on TV.
